LOS ANGELES - The #53-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to #4 UCLA to open play at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. It was the Waves' first dual of the 2015 season.

With a lineup consisting of five underclassmen and just one senior, the Waves (0-1) put up a formidable fight against the Bruins, who boast three singles players in the rankings.

UCLA won the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in the lineup, but despite the setback, Pepperdine did not slow down an ounce in singles play.

The Waves came out aggressive, but were unable to keep pace with the top-five Bruins. The home squad claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 5 to take a 3-0 lead.

At No. 4, Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) bounced back from an 0-4 deficit in set one to knot the score at 4-4 against Karue Sell. The freshman, with just four matches on his college resume prior to today, was unable to hold on, however, and bowed out 6-4. He similarly fell behind in set two, only to close the gap at 4-5 before falling 6-4.

Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) won a set for the Waves, taking the first frame 6-4 from #90-ranked Austin Rapp on court six.

Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS) put up a challenging fight against Dennis Mkrtchian at No. 2, falling 6-3, 7-6. Thakkar made the jump in the lineup after playing mostly from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in 2014.

In the marquee singles match, Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) was faced with seventh-ranked Mackenzie McDonald. Hadlich, playing in his first-ever dual match for Pepperdine, narrowly lost the first set in the tiebreaker, 10-8. Set two was locked at 2-2 when action was suspended.

Pepperdine plays #34 Boise State in consolation action on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Broncos fell to #48 Texas Tech earlier today, 4-0.
