Pepperdine-USF Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Similarly bad starts to both the first and second half proved pivotal as the Pepperdine men's basketball team went down to a 71-59 defeat at San Francisco on Thursday night in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves (12-7, 5-3) lost for the first time in four league road games, while the Dons (9-11, 3-5) collected their sixth straight win over Pepperdine.
USF jumped out to an 8-2 lead to begin the game, though Pepperdine was able to come back from that to eventually take a four-point advantage. The Dons led 31-28 at halftime, and another 8-2 start to the second half snowballed into a bigger run and the Waves couldn't get back into the game.
Junior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) led all players with 23 points and he also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Shawn Olden (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) was the only other Wave in double-figures with 15 points.
The Dons shot 65.2% from the field in the second half and 53.2% for the game, while the Waves were held to just 37.7% shooting. Sixteen turnovers also didn't help matters for Pepperdine.
After falling behind 8-2 after the first three minutes, the Waves responded with a 14-4 run, capped off by a three-point play by sophomore guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS), putting the Waves up 16-12 with 11 minutes left. USF would go back in front 26-20, but the Waves countered with six straight points to tie it up again. A three-pointer right before halftime sent USF into the break with a 31-28 lead.
The Dons hit eight of their first nine shots in the second half as an early 8-2 run grew to 19-6 over the first seven minutes. That gave USF its biggest lead of 16 points at 50-34. The Dons' advantage remained in double-digits for the remainder of the contest.
USF had four players in double-figures, led by Devin Watson's 16 points and Tim Derksen's 15.
This was the first of four straight games that the Waves will play in Northern California. On Saturday (Jan. 24), the Waves will be in action at Santa Clara at 8 p.m. The game will be shown locally on TheW.tv (and on tape-delay by Time Warner Cable SportsNet at midnight).
