RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's and women's tennis teams began play today at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic (NCTC), held at the Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage. Five different Waves made their collegiate debuts, and all five put a match in the win column.

On the women's side, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) all won in the first round.

Guillermo gave up just three games to Shayne Austin of Arizona, while Maddox won decisively versus San Diego's Marta Stojanovic.

Gulbe, who joined Pepperdine at the start of the new semester, made her Pepperdine debut with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Devin Chyphya.

Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) challenged #29-ranked Saska Gavrilosvska of Texas A&M, winning the first frame 7-5, but narrowly lost the second and third, 6-3, 6-3.

Guillermo picked up her second victory of the day, dispatching UCLA's Catherine Harrison in a hard-fought 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5) decision.

Freshman Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) won his very first singles match as a Wave, topping Jeff Hawke of Washington, 7-5, 6-4. Fellow freshman Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goethe Gymnasium Bensheim) exchanged sets with Rishabh Raman, and held on in the third to win 6-4.

Pepperdine's third freshman at the event, Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA), also edged Raman in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia), who redshirted in 2013-14, topped Wendell Watanabe 6-2, 6-2

In doubles, Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) earned a close 7-6 victory over Krista Hardebeck and Lindsey Kostas of Stanford.

The National Collegiate Tennis Classic continues on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
