Pepperdine-USD Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Eighteen points from Stacy Davis and another outstanding defensive performance lifted the Pepperdine men's basketball team to a milestone road victory as the Waves knocked off San Diego, 59-47, in West Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
After beating BYU on Thursday, the Waves (11-5, 4-1) captured their first weekend road sweep in conference play since 2002. Pepperdine also now has its best five-game WCC record since starting 11-0 in 2002. The Waves have won all three of their WCC road games so far. With six to play, they've already matched their most road victories in league play in the previous 10 seasons.
The Waves held the Toreros (9-9, 2-4) to 29.7% shooting for the game. Just like the BYU contest, Pepperdine never trailed in the contest after jumping out to an 11-2 lead and a 31-21 advantage at halftime.
Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS), a junior forward who was an All-WCC first team selection last year, was the only player in the game to score in double-figures despite coming off the bench. He also pulled down seven rebounds and was 8-for-9 from the foul line. Davis averaged 20.5 points over the weekend's two victories.
Five other Waves scored between seven and nine points. Junior guard Atif Russell (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes HS) had nine points and a career-high-tying seven rebounds. Freshman forward A.J. John (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS) started for the second straight game and had season highs of eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) had eight points and junior forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) and freshman guard Shawn Olden (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) both had seven.
The Waves shot 44.4% from the field and had a 44-31 advantage on the boards.
Pepperdine held USD to just one made field goal on its first 13 attempts, and the Waves took an 11-2 lead after 7 1/2 minutes. The Toreros got as close as four points at 18-14 with eight minutes left. But a 10-3 run gave Pepperdine its first double-digit lead of the game at 28-17 with under two minutes left when Major sank a very deep three-pointer to beat the shot clock.
The Waves' biggest lead of the first half was 12 points at 31-19 after Davis converted a three-point play with 1:05 left, and Pepperdine went into halftime with a 31-21 lead.
The second half began like the first, with Pepperdine harassing USD into missing nine of its first 10 shots. It was still just an eight-point game at 37-29 with less than 13 minutes to play, but the Waves then held USD scoreless for nearly five minutes and went on a 9-0 run. The Waves took their biggest lead of 17 points at 46-29 after two free throws by Raines with 8:27 to go.
USD immediately responded with a 9-0 run of its own, however, cutting the deficit back down to eight at 46-38 with five minutes left.
But baskets by Major, Russell and John helped counter USD's spurt, and the Toreros got no closer than seven points at 52-45 with 1:30 left. Pepperdine closed the game out by making seven of 10 free throws.
Pepperdine's defensive performance was all the more impressive considering that one of its top defenders, sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More), missed the game due to injury.
The Waves held USD's top scorer, Johnny Dee, to nine points on 3-for-11 shooting.
Pepperdine returns home to host sixth-ranked Gonzaga on Thursday (Jan. 15) at 7:30 p.m. and Portland on Saturday (Jan. 17) at 5 p.m. Both games will be shown locally on Time Warner Cable SportsNet. Fans can also listen to the games via WaveCasts with Al Epstein at PepperdineSports.com.
