ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Pepperdine women's golf team turned in the tournament's best round of the entire Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on Tuesday, allowing the Waves to move up to a fourth-place finish.
The Waves struggled a bit in the first round of the season-opening event, but steadily improved over the two days. Play was halted late in the second round due to rain on Monday afternoon, and the 16 teams finished up this morning before beginning the third round.
Pepperdine, which was the defending champion, shot a 7-under 285 on Tuesday at the par-72 UNM Championship Course. That gave the Waves a three-round total of a 7-over 883 (302-296-285). The 7-under ties the 10th-best 18-hole score in program history.
All four Waves that scored during Tuesday's final round shot even-par or better. Senior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) and freshman Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C./Zhuji Hailiang Private School) both had 3-under 70s, junior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) had a 1-under 72 and freshman Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Shenton College) had an even-par 73.
Chow, a returning Golfweek All-American, got her season off to a very good start, as she finished in sixth place with a 3-under 216 (73-71-72). She had 11 birdies over the two days, including three in the third round today, all of which came consecutively on holes 17, 18 and 1.
Making her collegiate debut, Wijaya turned in her first top-20 finish with a tie for 19th place at a 3-over 222 (74-75-73). Her even-par third round included three birdies, and she had an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole during the first round.
Lee tied for 27th place with a 5-over 224 (79-75-70), Zhu tied for 34th place with a 6-over 225 (76-79-70) and senior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied for 67th at 236 (86-75-75). Lee had four birdies against just one bogey during the third round, while Zhu had five birdies and two bogeys.
Playing as individuals, sophomore Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Asuncion Christian Academy) tied for 60th at 233 (74-79-80) and sophomore Andrea Unson (Manila, Philippines/Walkersville Christian) tied for 82nd at 240 (79-80-81).
