MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's Aaron Barnett picked up his third Freshman All-American award today as he garnered first team honors from Baseball America.
Barnett is the lone catcher on the 16-player first team and is the first Pepperdine player since Brett Hunter in 2006 to earn the honor. He has also been named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA already this year.
Barnett is second on the first team with a .359 batting average, as he recorded 80 hits this year for the Waves. He was the toughest hitter on the team to strikeout during the regular season, recording just nine strikeouts in 190 at bats. Over the course of his rookie campaign, Barnett amassed 27 RBI and 23 runs scored while throwing out 39 percent of base-stealers from behind the plate. He played in 60 of the Waves' 61 games this season.
Barnett was named to the All-WCC freshman team and was All-WCC honorable mention in his first season with the program. He also earned WCC Player of the Week on the final week of the season, helping the Waves clinch the regular-season WCC title.
Pepperdine and LMU were the only two WCC teams to have players named to the Baseball America Freshman All-American teams as LMU's Austin Miller also made the first team.
