Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team will hold its Alumni Weekend on Jan. 25 and 26 when it hosts the Scolinos Alumni Game and Awards Dinner, and Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament.
The Scolinos Alumni Game will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25 and will be followed by the Scolinos Award Dinner at 5 p.m. The team's annual golf fundraiser - the Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament - will take place Monday, Jan. 26 at the Moorpark Country Club in Moorpark, Calif.
The alumni game will be held at the iconic Eddy D. Field Stadium and the awards dinner will follow at the Firestone Fieldhouse courtyard. Space is limited for the awards dinner, so contact Jamil Macias (Jamil.Macias@Pepperdine.edu) to reserve your space.
The John Scolinos Alumni Game is held annually before the start of the Pepperdine baseball season and gives Pepperdine baseball alumni the chance to reconnect and remember what it was like to play in a Waves uniform. The Pepperdine baseball alumni will face off against the current Waves baseball squad. The game is played in honor of Pepperdine coaching legend, John Scolinos. The Scolinos Award has been given annually since 2005 and recognizes one Pepperdine Baseball student-athlete for his exemplary behavior during a season or career. The recipient will be honored for demonstrating strong character traits, including humility, resourcefulness, loyalty, honesty, work ethic, Christian behavior and sportsmanship.
The Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament is named in honor of the former Waves' third baseman, who died alongside his father, Bill, in a tragic plane crash during the winter of 2010. Rooney played at Pepperdine from 2002 to 2005 and helped lead the Waves to a pair of West Coast Conference titles and three NCAA Regional berths. Patrick continued to support the program following graduation by participating in the team's annual golf tournaments.
Check-in time for the foursome scramble is 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start set for 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded following the 4 p.m. buffet dinner to the winning team as well as those who win the "Closest to the Pin" and "Longest Drive" contests. The entry fee is $200 per player. A silent auction also will take place throughout the day. This year's items include sports memorabilia, golf amenities, baseball merchandise, sportswear, dinners for two and other exciting items. For more information on the tournament, an entry form and directions to the Moorpark Country Club, see the attached pdf.
All funds raised support the ongoing development of the Pepperdine baseball team and its facilities. The Waves have made significant upgrades to Eddy D. Field Stadium each of the past 10 years, earning their facility rave reviews as "the most beautiful stadium in the country." Many of the upgrades have brought a more professional feel to the complex, including renovations to the clubhouse this year. The fundraising efforts also allow the Waves to travel all of their team on special trips and gain valuable experiences during their collegiate careers.
The Waves traveled to Taiwan last fall, playing in the inaugural Formosa Cup against collegiate teams from Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The team is currently fundraising for a foreign tour to Japan next year. This is a unique experience that Head Coach Steve Rodriguez and his staff value as life-changing and hope to be able to share with future generations of Wave baseball student-athletes.
