PALO ALTO, Calif. - Alina Ching (-4) and Marissa Chow (-2) posted excellent scores during Friday's first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, and the Pepperdine women's golf team is in a tie for sixth place.
The Waves shot a 2-over 286 and are tied with San Jose State and Iowa State at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course. Play continues with the second round on Saturday and the third and final round on Sunday. The tournament includes five top-10 and seven top-25 teams, including the #12 Waves.
The 4-under by Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tied her career best, which was set earlier this fall at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Her first-round 67 has put her into a tie for second place. She had six birdies on the day and was 6-under at one point before a couple of late bogeys.
Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is tied for sixth place after a 2-under 69. She had a total of four birdies during her round.
Freshman Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Shenton College) also had a good day, with birdies on three of her final seven holes to get back to an even-par 71. She had a total of four birdies.
Also, sophomore Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Asuncion Christian Academy) is tied for 82nd after a 79, and senior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is 86th after an 80.
