BYU BOX SCORE
PROVO, Utah - Pepperdine looked to even its series against Brigham Young Friday, but could not hold off a late rally, dropping a tough 10-9 West Coast Conference decision at Larry H. Miller Field. The Waves (14-11, 5-3 WCC) drop their first league series since the opening set of the 2012 season to the Cougars (13-13, 2-3 WCC) a string of nine straight.
Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) enjoyed a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and the first baseman clubbed his fourth home run of the year, finishing with three RBI. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) did plenty of damage at the plate as well, finishing 3-for-5 with a triple and his second home run of the year and second in his last three games.
Pepperdine looked to be in control with a four-run fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead, but the Cougars answered immediately with two runs in the home half to make it a 6-4 deficit. After the Waves scored once in the sixth, BYU posted a four-spot in the bottom of the frame to seize a lead it would not surrender at 8-7.
Brigham Young added two in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-7 advantage and needed every bit of it as the Waves scored twice in the eighth to close to within one at 10-9. Pepperdine would get no closer as the Cougars retired the side in order in the ninth.
Scott Frazier (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) off 14 hits and struck out eight with two walks. Anderson took the win in relief for the Cougars and struck out a pair in 2.1 innings.
Pepperdine looks to bounce back in Saturday's finale. First pitch against the Cougars in game three is set for a noon start in a game broadcast live on BYUradio.org.
