MALIBU, Calif. - The #35 Pepperdine women's tennis team earned its sixth-straight victory with a 7-0 shutout against #71 San Diego on Friday afternoon. The Waves now sit atop the West Coast Conference standings with a perfect 5-0 record.
The Toreros (6-8, 3-1 WCC) challenged the Waves in one of the most evenly contested doubles battles of the season, but a gritty performance by the No. 1 pair of Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), aided by a boisterous home crowd, gave the team the edge heading into singles.
Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) got things started with an 8-2 triumph over Stephanie Hoffpauir and Cara Brown, but USD responded with a win from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Maja Sujuica and Anna Depenau topped Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) and Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS) 8-3.
With the doubles point still up for grabs, all eyes fell on court one, where Issara and Guillermo were deadlocked with Juliette Coupez and Laura Claus 7-7. The Wave duo fought back from love-40 to break the Toreros' serve for the third time in the match, and take an 8-7 lead.
In the next game, with Issara on serve, Pepperdine went up match point at 40-30, but Coupez and Claus were able to score the next point to tie the game at deuce. Once again, the Wave duo gained the advantage after a Torero shot sailed long. On match point No. 2, Issara hit a blazing forehand that the opponents were unable to get a racquet on.
The momentum carried over into singles, and Pepperdine (11-6, 5-0 WCC) won five of the six matches in straight sets. Walters was the first to finish, downing Sujica 6-2, 6-3.
Granillo gave the Waves a 3-0 lead with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 triumph versus Hoffpauir on court two. Issara soon followed, downing Coupez in the top match 6-3, 6-1. Issara is now 5-2 since moving to the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup.
Guillermo outlasted Claus, 6-4, 6-2, while Moore recorded a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Marite Raygada.
Colffer was dominant in the opening set versus Depenau, winning 6-1, but the Torero was able to earn the set back, 6-3, in the second. Colffer took an early lead in the deciding set, but with the dual decided and another important match tomorrow, Depenau decided to retired.
The Waves are now off until next week Friday (April 13) and Saturday (April 14) when they play Portland and Gonzaga on the road.
