Women's Tennis Falls to Long Beach State

MALIBU, Calif. - Despite singles victories from Lorraine Guillermo and Arianna Colffer, the #34 Pepperdine women's tennis team fell to #54 Long Beach State 5-2. The Waves look to rebound on Saturday, during their regular season finale against BYU.
Long Beach State (15-5) took the early lead after winning two of the three doubles matches.
Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) opened the match with an 8-2 triumph over Rachel Manasse and Laura Bernard that extended their win streak to 10. The duo is now a team-best 16-3 in dual play and 18-4 overall.
The 49ers answered with an 8-4 win from court three.
In the deciding match, Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Christian HS) and Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) overcame an 3-love deficit and battled with Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska all the way to a 6-6 tie. Although both pairs had a difficult time holding serve in the final games, the 49ers went on a late run and claimed the match 9-7.
The momentum carried over in singles, and the 49ers won four of the six singles matches with clinch the 5-2 dual victory.
Colffer put Pepperdine (13-7) on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Sarah Cantlay.
Guillermo also scored for the Waves, downing Bernard 6-4, 6-0.
Walters and Malenovska exchanged sets before matching one another point-for-point, all the way to the tiebreaker in the deciding frame. Malenovska edged Walters 7-5 in the tiebreaker to escape with the three set win.
Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico) also suffered three set losses, while Issara dropped a closely fought 6-4, 6-3 decision to Dallara.
The Waves celebrate Senior Day tomorrow, April 21 prior to their match versus BYU. Starting at 11 a.m., it will be the final regular-season home match for Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa/Pretoria HS) and Walters.
