FRESNO, Calif. - Originally scheduled to be the 2012 dual season opener, the #7 Pepperdine men's tennis team tangled with #34 Fresno State during the final week of the regular season. The Waves came out on top, 4-3, to extend their win streak to 17.
The first time the Waves (20-6, 7-0 WCC) and the Bulldogs (17-4) met on January 22, the squads battled for over eight hours, only to come to a 3-3 tie before the rain took over. The match was rescheduled for April 11 but a dismal forecast forced the teams to move the event to another date.
Mother Nature finally cooperated today, and the two teams competed in sunny and warm conditions.
The Waves won two of the three doubles matches to enter singles with a 1-0 lead. Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) extended their win streak to 12 after defeating Jean-Charles Diame and Reid deLaubenfels, 8-3.
Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep), who was announced as the Pepperdine Male Athlete of the Year at the Student-Athlete Honors Banquet in Malibu tonight, and his doubles partner Jenson Turner (Woodland Hill, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) downed David Ayoun and Zach Leslie, 8-4.
In singles, the Waves took a 3-0 lead after Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) and Fanselow handed in straight-set wins. Llompart scored a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Ayoun, while Fanselow posted his 13th-straight win with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Remi Boutillier.
The Bulldogs got on the board with wins from the No. 4 and No. 2 spots in the lineup, but Turner captured the dual-winning fourth point for Pepperdine. The senior defeated DeLaubenfels 7-5, 6-2.
Clarke was up 7-5, 5-1 against Leslie, but retired to give Fresno State its third point of the dual.
The Waves wrap the regular season at BYU on Saturday, April 21 before opening postseason action at the West Coast Conference Championship on April 26-28 in San Diego, Calif.
