MALIBU, Calif. - The #7 Pepperdine men's tennis team added two victories to its record after defeating both Santa Clara and San Francisco in today's West Coast Conference doubleheader. The Waves improve to 14-6 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the league.
The Waves opened the day with a 6-1 win against the Broncos. After a closely contested doubles point, Pepperdine cruised through singles play in dominant fashion.
Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) and Jenson Turner (Woodland Hill, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) took a 4-1 lead before Kyle Dandan and Tom Pham battled their way back and knotted the score at 5-all. The Pepperdine pair would not allow another game, however, and put the match away 8-5.
Mere moments later, Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys' College) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 triumph over Nicholas Vinel and Eugene Muchynski.
The Broncos avoided the sweep with a win from the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
In singles, Fanselow overpowered Kyle Dandan 6-1, 6-1, before Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) defeated Pham by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Clarke put the fourth point on the board for the Waves, issuing Muchynski a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
Llompart allowed just three games in his straight-set win versus Vinel.
Osintsev recorded Santa Clara's only point of the day with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Turner, while Tearney put the finishing touches on the Waves' first match with a three-set win against Lamble.
Pepperdine returned to the courts a little less than two hours later, and were able to keep the energy up and down the Dons 7-0.
Sofaer and Clarke opened things up with a decisive 8-1 victory to mark their team-best eighth win in a row.
Fanselow and Turner moved up to the top spot in the lineup and took down Germain Bahri and Jonathon Knowlman, 8-3, while Llompart and Hovhannisyan paired up and defeated William Schumacher and Thai Tu by a score of 7-4.
Fanselow cruised through singles once against and topped Tu 6-1, 6-2. Sofaer followed suit and put away a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Richard Bucalem.
Clarke and Llompart won in straight sets to improve their win streaks to four and six, respectively.
Hovhannisyan took the first frame against Bernardo Saraiva, 6-1, but fell behind 2-5 in set two. The junior battled back and eventually secured the win, 7-2, in the tiebreaker to avoid going to a third set.
Daniel Moss (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) tallied the final victory of the day, rebounding from a 6-3 loss in the opener to win 6-2, 10-5 against Jacob Hartwig.
Pepperdine returns to action next week with road matches at San Diego (April 4) and Saint Mary's (April 7).
