SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Pepperdine men's tennis concluded three more of their fall tournaments on Sunday, as David Fix and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida completed the Battle of the Bay Classic. Edward Winter also competed at the Columbus Challenger in Ohio, and Aleksa Pisaric and Lasse Poertner battled at the Fayetteville M15 in Arkansas.
Â
In the Upper South, it was Pisaric falling in straight sets (6-7, 4-6) to Great Britain's Charlie Robertson in main draw singles. Poertner played a pair of matches in the qualifying draw singles and in his first one, he defeated Kabeer Kapasi (6-2, 6-1) before falling to Noah Schlagenhauf (4-6, 3-6).
Â
Winter faced Mees Rottgering in the round of 32 singles at the Columbus Challenger but came up short in straight sets (5-7, 3-6).
Â
At the Battle of the Bay, Fix and Almeida went 2-1 in doubles matches, making it to the semifinals. The duo blanked Paris Pouatcha and Lenn Luemkemann (8-0) and took care of business in the quarterfinals with an 8-4 victory over Miguel Avendano Cadena and Lorenzo Brunkow. Fix and Almeida's solid run came to a close with a 5-8 loss to Matthieu Chambonniere and Maximus Dussault.
Â
Fix found more success in singles, downing Avendano Cadena in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) before defeating Raphael Vaksmann (6-3, 6-4). In an epic quarterfinal battle, Fix pulled out a nail-biting straight-set win, taking care of the tiebreaking point in the first set (7-6 (7-4), 6-3). It was a tough draw for Fix in the semifinal, falling to Landon Ardila (0-6, 4-6).
Â
It took three sets, but Almeida narrowly defeated JP Day in the round of 32. He dropped the first set 2-6 before completing the reverse sweep with a 6-1 win in set two and 6-3 win in set three, advancing to the round of 16. 'Gus' was able to pull ahead early on Kaj Quirijns with a 7-5 opening set win, but dropped the next two and moved to the consolation part of the bracket, where he fell in three sets to number 101-ranked Julian Alonso (6-3, 2-6, 10-7).
Â
"Battle in the Bay is one of the premier events in college tennis, and we are proud of how Gustavo and David represented our program," said Director of Tennis Adam Schaechterle. "Gus has matured this fall, and it was great to see him compete through the ups and downs of tough matches without relenting."
Â
"This will be a breakout season for Fixer," continued Schaechterle. "His game identity is coming together, and he is showing another level of self confidence. He played long stretches where he looked like an All-American."
The Waves have just one tournament coming this week, the UCSB Invite, hosted by UC Santa Barbara, which takes place Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11.
