TULSA, Okla. - The #13 Pepperdine men's tennis team claimed its second-straight victory over a top-20 opponent after defeating #19 Tulsa 4-3 inside the Case Tennis Center on Friday evening. Leading the Waves was Jenson Turner, who clinched the dual with a singles win, and Finn Tearney and Alex Llompart, who gave their team the go-ahead victory that secured the doubles point.
Although the Golden Hurricane (5-6) took the early lead with a doubles win on court two, the Waves (5-6) stormed back to win the remaining two matches and secure the doubles point.
Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys' College) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) won their third straight match after defeating Japie De Klerk and Tristan Jackson, 8-3.
With the doubles point still in the balance, all eyes turned to Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) and Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College), ranked #52 as a pair, and the #3-ranked duo of Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland on court one.
Llompart and Tearney did not disappoint, snapping the Tulsa tandem's seven-match win streak with an 8-5 victory.
This is the third win over a top-10 ranked doubles team for Llompart and Tearney this season.
In singles, the Golden Hurricane evened the score with a win courtesy of Marsland, before Clarke put the Waves back on top with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lucian Gheorghe.
The momentum continued to roll in Pepperdine's favor, as wins from the #2 and #6 spots in the lineup secured the dual.
Tearney edged Watling in the tiebreaker in the opening set, before hitting his stride and taking the second frame 6-1.
Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) clinched the dual after downing Alejandro Espejo 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Although the dual had already been decided, Tulsa's De Klerk and Grant Ive earned wins to put the final score at 4-3.
The Waves travel to the city of Norman, where they'll face #20 Oklahoma on Sunday at 11 a.m. Live scoring can be followed here: http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-tennis/livescoring.html
