#13 California Holds Off #12 Pepperdine

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The #12 Pepperdine men's tennis team was unable to overcome a tough California squad, as the Waves fell to the #13-ranked Golden Bears, 4-2, at the ITA Indoor National Championship.
Cal put a point on the board first, winning two of the three doubles matches. Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) and Jenson Turner (Woodland Hill, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) dropped a close 8-6 decision to #16-ranked Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan, while Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) and Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) suffered an 8-3 loss to the #4-ranked pair of Nick Andrews and Chris Konigsfeldt.
Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) were up 7-6 against Riki McLachlan and Andrew Scholnick when play was halted.
The Waves saw wins from the #5 and #6 spots in the lineup, as Clarke topped Gregory Bayane, 6-2, 6-4 and Turner downed Ahmed Ismail, 6-3, 6-1.
The Golden Bears claimed straight-set wins on courts two, three and four to secure the team victory.
Fanselow was up a set against Cal's top singles player in Andrews when action was stopped.
The Waves continue consolation play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and will face either UCLA or Tennessee.
