Under the Lights, #8 Waves Roll Past #26 San Diego

MALIBU, Calif. - On a crisp evening in Malibu, the #8 Pepperdine men's tennis team topped #26 San Diego under the lights of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves improve to 16-4 and a perfect 3-0 in the West Coast Conference, while the Toreros fall to 15-3 and 2-1 in the league.
After losing the doubles point last time out versus Washington, Pepperdine got its game back on track. #54-ranked Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) and Jenson Turner (Woodland, Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) made their debut in the top doubles spot with a 8-6 win versus Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive.
The Moreno brothers (Alejandro and Alfredo) got it done on court three with an 8-6 win of their own over Abdullah Hashem and Dean Jackson.
The Toreros picked up their only point of the dual after Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) was forced to retire in his singles contest.
It was all Pepperdine from there, as they won every remaining singles match.
Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico/JFK School) finished 6-2, 6-2, before Mousheg Hovahannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) downed Emilio Mora 6-0, 6-3.
Fanselow gave the Waves the dual clincher with his 6-4, 6-3 win versus Nikola Bubnic on court two. David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Learning) escaped the first set with a win in the tiebreaker, before putting his match away against Schive 6-3 in the second.
Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico/San Juan Educational School) put the final win on the board for the Waves with a three-set victory over #106-ranked Clarke Spinosa.
Next up for Pepperdine is a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9. At 10 a.m. the Waves face Saint Mary's before an afternoon dual with Sacramento State. Pepperdine concludes the regular season the following Monday, April 11, when they face local rival UCLA.
