MALIBU, Calif. - Another stellar effort tonight from Pepperdine, led by sophomore Maurice Torres and senior Cory Riecks, sent the Waves past UCLA 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) inside Firestone Fieldhouse. Pepperdine concludes the 2011 campaign on a high note, with back-to-back wins this week to finish with an 11-15 record.

Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) paced all hitters with 18 kills earned on a .433 hitting percentage, followed by Riecks' (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) 11 put aways and a match-high .526 clip.

The Bruins (16-14, 9-13) managed to outhit Pepperdine 56-50 in kill totals, but the Waves' proficiency proved to be the difference maker in the match. Pepperdine recorded a .396 (50-14-91) hitting percentage, while holding UCLA to a .268 (56-26-112) success rate.

Prior to the match, Pepperdine recognized seniors Riecks, Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Kasey Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Trevor Van Uden (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS), who helped the Waves to a 66-41 record in their four-year stint Malibu.

Crider finishes his illustrious Pepperdine career with 3,989 assists to rank second in the Wave record books, and fourth with a 12.16 assists/set average. Riecks became a member of the 1,000 kills club earlier this season, and concludes with a four-year total of 1,143 kills to rank 13th all-time. Jaynes, who nailed down five kills tonight on nine errorless swings, ranks fourth with a career hitting percentage of .433. In the blocking category, Jaynes moved into fifth place this evening and has totaled 468 rejects while competing as a Wave.

After falling behind 3-7 in the early stages of the first set, the Waves rallied back with a 9-3 run to take a 12-10 lead. UCLA struggled on the attack, with 10 attack errors, while Pepperdine committed just one miscue en route to a 25-19 win. Torres was a perfect 6-for-6 on the attack to lead the Waves.

The second game fared better for the visitors, who began to find their offensive rhythm. Tied at 18, UCLA scored three unanswered points to take the final lead of the frame to go on to win 25-22.

Things fell back in step for Pepperdine in the third set, hitting 13 kills with just two errors and siding out 85% of the time. The Waves took the lead 10-9, following a Crider-Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS) tandem block and built from there. Pepperdine took the 2-1 lead after another block, this time by Torres and Jaynes, put the 25th point on the board.

Neither squad was able to command the lead in the fourth set, until Pepperdine put together a 5-2 run to take an 18-15 advantage. UCLA came back to within a point, but the Waves never relinquished the lead. After the Bruins erased two match points, Torres came through with a kill to clinch the "W" for the home team.

In addition to his five kills, Jaynes tallied a match-high five blocks. Pollock concluded the evening with eight kills and a pair of rejections, as well as a service ace to score 10.0 points. Mike McMahon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) defended with seven digs, while Crider dished 45 assists.
