MALIBU, Calif. - Despite recording four victories over ranked opponents today at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, the #28 Pepperdine wrapped up its regular season with a narrow 4-3 loss to #6 UCLA on Senior Day. It was the final home match for senior standout Anamika Bhargava.
Pepperdine enters postseason play with an 11-7 record, while the visitors improved to 16-5 on the year.
The Bruins won the doubles point, but not without a serious challenge from the Waves. Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Centre) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) made a huge statement, defeating the #16-ranked duo of McCall Jones and Noelle Hickey. It was the first win over a ranked opponent for Issara and Granillo this season, and the highest ranked opponent any Pepperdine pair has defeated in 2011.
On court three, both pairs went game-for-game until Pamela Montez and Carling Seguso went on a late run to defeat Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) 8-4.
In the top match, Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hill HS) broke the serve of #17 Courtney Dolehide and Andrea Remynse to tie the match at six-games all. UCLA broke right back, however, and held serve to escape with an 8-6 win to clinch the doubles point.
UCLA won the next three matches to secure the team win.
Bhargava wasn't done yet, however, determined to make the most of her senior day - which also happened to double as her birthday. After topping #43 Hickley 6-3 in the first frame, the second set was forced into a tiebreaker. Bhargava won 8-6 to step off her home court for the final time on the right foot.
Issara bounced back from a 6-2 first set deficit to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 versus #99 Montez. It was the redshirt junior's 20th win of the season.
Granillo put the third and final point on the board for the home team with a three-set upset win over #62 Andrea Remynse.
The Waves gear up for postseason action beginning next weekend, April 21-23, when the University of San Diego hosts the 2011 West Coast Conference Championships. The Waves are 3-0 versus league opponents this season.
