SEATTLE - Despite losing the doubles point on the road to #20 Washington, the #7 Pepperdine men's tennis team responded with five singles wins to claim the dual 5-2. The Waves conclude the month of March with four victories over top-30 ranked opponents, and improve to 15-4 overall.
The Huskies' seven-match win streak was snapped to put their 2011 record at 14-5.
The home team took the early lead after winning doubles matches on courts one and three. Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) and Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) prevented the sweep with an 8-5 win over #68-ranked Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus to improve to team-high 17-3 this season.
The setback did little to slow down the Waves, however, as all six singles players won their respective first sets. Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) dominated on court two, defeating Kyle McMorrow 6-2, 6-1. Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) gave Pepperdine the 2-1 lead after a straight-set triumph on court six.
The momentum continued to run in the Waves' favor as Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) topped Daniel Schmidt 6-4, 6-4. Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) sealed the victory for his squad with a three-set win against #71-ranked Martin Kildahl.
Fanselow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan appeared evenly matched in the top spot, as Fanselow took the first frame 7-5 while Nedunchezhiyan responded with second set win in the tiebreaker. With the dual decided, the pair played a 10 point tiebreaker to determine the winner. Fanselow came out on top by a score of 10-3.
The final match to conclude would be Washington's only singles victory of the day as Obenaus needed three sets to defeated David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia).
Next up for Pepperdine is a 5 p.m. match versus West Coast Conference foe San Diego on Sat., April 2 inside the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
