FRESNO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team suffered two losses Sunday at Fresno State. The Bulldogs won 7-5 in the first game, 8-1 in the second, and the Waves dropped to 3-4 on the season. Fresno State is 6-0.

Pepperdine rallied from a pair three-run deficits in game one with five runs scored between the sixth and eighth innings before Fresno State ultimately prevailed against relievers Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) and Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS).

The Bulldogs' winning runs were credited to Danny Muno, whose fly ball to left with the bases loaded was misplayed by David DiPaola (San Carlos, Calif./Junipero Serra HS). The error allowed Daniel Moultrie to race home easily from third and Austin Wynns to score an unearned run from second

The two-run lead was more than enough for Fresno State closer Charlie Robertson as he retired the side in order to earn his second save in as many days. Reliever Taylor Garrison was credited with the win.

Pepperdine's comeback started in the sixth inning with the Waves trailing 3-0. Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) led off with a double and was still standing there two out later when Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) was finally able to drive him home on a single to right.

Humphries then cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2 with an unearned run knocked in by Tyler Brubaker (Valencia, Calif./Saugus HS).

Pepperdine's momentum, however, was temporarily derailed as the home team built its lead back up to 5-2 with three extra base hits, including a solo home run by Dusty Robinson - his second in as many days.

Robinson's round-tripper was followed by a triple by Kenny Wise that knocked Pepperdine starter Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) out of the game, and then with Najera on the hill, Wynns ripped a RBI double down the left-field line.

The Waves had one last comeback left in them though, first scoring a single run in the seventh that made it a 5-3 game, and then tying it in the eighth thanks to a pair of leadoff hits and a two-out error by shortstop Garrett Weber that allowed Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard) to score.

Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./Servite HS) also came home in the eighth on Joe Sever's (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) RBI ground ball to second. Both Amezquita and Sever along with Silverstein finished the first game with two hits.

In his second start of the year, Moscot struck out three over 5.1 innings of work and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk.

Game two lacked the drama of the first as the Bulldogs jumped on freshman starter Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) for four runs in their first at-bat. They later tacked on two more runs off the Waves' bullpen in the fifth and eighth frames.

Pepperdine's offense collected 10 hits, equaling Fresno State's total, but would only score once in the seventh on Zach Vincej's (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) sacrifice fly to left that plated Torrey Jacoby (Camarillo, Calif./Notre Dame (Ariz.) Preparatory).

The Waves return home to Eddy D. Field Stadium, where they are 3-0 this season, Tuesday for a 2 p.m. game vs. regional rival UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are 3-2 after having today's game at Washington State canceled by snow.

Tuesday's Malibu forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 64.
