MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The #21 Pepperdine men's tennis team recorded its third shutout of the weekend after defeating #22 Auburn, 4-0, to win the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic and improve to 9-2 overall. Sebastian Fanselow was named tournament MVP after going undefeated in both singles and doubles action.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany) is the second Pepperdine student-athlete to win MVP honors at the Blue Gray Classic, now in its 28th year as a team tournament. Robbie Weiss was named the Most Valuable Player during the 1988 season. In addition, Ed Nagel was given the sportsmanship award in 1985.
This is also the second time the Waves have captured the tournament title, as they first did so in 1985.
All weekend, Pepperdine has faced some of the nation's top talent. Despite the challenge, the Waves failed to lose a single match in three duals.
The first team point went to Pepperdine, who is now 9-1 when winning the doubles point. Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) defeated Rafael Rondino and Lucas Lopasso 8-4. Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) and Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) secured the point after topping Daniel Cochrane and Tim Puetz, 8-6.
The momentum continued to roll in the Waves' favor in singles, beginning with Mousheg Hovhannisyan's (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) straight-set win to put Pepperdine up 2-0.
Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Cochrane. Team captain Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) secured the dual for the Waves, topping Alex Stamchey 6-3, 6-1.
To get to the championship match, Pepperdine beat #32 Alabama and #26 Notre Dame, both by scores of 4-0. Auburn's journey to the finals included a 4-1 win over #37 Boise State, before upsetting #17-ranked and top seeded Texas Tech, 4-3.
Pepperdine returns to the court next week, March 4-6, for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla, Calif.
