LOS ANGELES, Calif. - It was a rough night for both Pepperdine pitchers and hitters in a 9-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA on a cool Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The loss snapped the Waves' season-opening winning streak at three games, while the 2010 College World Series runners-up remain unbeaten at 4-0 without having surrendered an earned run this year through 36.0 innings pitched.

Pepperdine's offense was held to five hits and wouldn't string together two consecutive base knocks until there were two outs in the ninth inning. The Waves also loaded the bases twice in the fourth and sixth innings, but were unable to light their end of the scoreboard.

UCLA had no trouble scoring runs, first putting up a five spot on four hits in the first off freshman starter Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS), and then tacking on three more in the fifth off relievers Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./:La Costa Canyon HS) and Jordan Luvisi (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory (Ariz.). The Bruins scratched out one final run in the eighth on a double-play ball with the bases loaded.

Freshman Cody Dickerson (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) was the lone Wave pitcher to escape the mound unscathed by a steady Bruins' offense that sprayed nine hits (only one for extra bases) and drew eight walks. Dickerson pitched 1.2 innings in between the sixth and seventh frames and totaled two strikeouts in his collegiate debut.

The Bruins pitching staff was paced by starter and game-winner Scott Griggs, who struck out five over 4.0 innings. He was followed to the mound by four relievers each of whom pitched an inning or more of scoreless relief.

Junior center fielder Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) was the only Wave to reach base twice and did so on two walks. He also made a spectacular running catch at his position to rob Bruin cleanup hitter Dean Espy of extra bases, and later started an 8-4 double play after running in to snare a soft line drive off the bat of Trevor Brown.

Humphries and sophomore Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) executed a double steal in the fourth inning, which were two of four swipes the Waves had on the night. Vincej raised his stolen base season total to four with his pair of thefts.

The Waves return to action Friday for the start of a three-game series at Fresno State.
