MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's basketball team suffered through its coldest shooting night of the season and the result was a 63-44 loss to visiting Gonzaga in West Coast Conference play on Saturday.
The Waves (11-7, 5-6) hit 27.4% of their shots, though they did a solid job defensively in holding the Bulldogs (17-9, 7-3) to 38.6% shooting from the field and 29 fewer points than in the first meeting between the two schools.
Pepperdine's top two scorers were seniors playing in their final home game. Forward Mychel Thompson (Portland, Ore./Santa Margarita Catholic HS/Stoneridge Prep) had nine points and five rebounds, and forward Gus Clardy (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches HS) had eight points and five rebounds.
Gonzaga scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. The Bulldogs built a 10-point lead midway through the first half, though Pepperdine got it down to six at 24-18 with less than four minutes left when sophomore guard Joshua Lowery (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) made a steal and got the ball to junior guard Lorne Jackson (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) for a fast-break lay-up.
However, Gonzaga ended the half on a 9-2 run to go into halftime with a 33-20 advantage. The Bulldogs then maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
For the Bulldogs, Elias Harris had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Sam Dower added 13 points and eight rebounds and Marquise Carter contributed eight points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Two of Gonzaga's stars, Robert Sacre and Steven Gray, combined for just nine points.
Lowery lad seven points, six rebounds and five assists for the Waves, while Jackson, junior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) and junior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) all recorded six points and six rebounds.
The Waves play their final three regular-season games on the road, beginning at rival Loyola Marymount on Wednesday (Feb. 16) at 8 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
