Fanselow Advances to Consolation Finals at ITA All-American Championship

TULSA, Okla. - Sebastian Fanselow of the Pepperdine men's tennis team advanced to the consolation singles final at the ITA All-American Championship. A win tomorrow would punch the junior's ticket to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship on Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y.
It was nearly an all-Pepperdine final, but Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) was ousted in the semifinals by #3-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan Prep), ranked #19 in the Campbell's/ITA Collegiate singles rankings, will have his turn versus Quigley tomorrow on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Both Fanselow and Tearney won their quarterfinal matchups. Tearney knocked out Mississippi State's Malte Stropp, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
He followed that up with valiant effort versus Quigley, who reached the singles main draw finals during the 2010 ITA All-American Championship. Tearney lost the first frame in the tiebreaker before bowing out in the second set, 6-3.
Fanselow cruised past #15 Ray Sarmiento of USC, 6-3, 6-2. A tight match with George Coupland followed, but Fanselow prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the finals.
At the women's ITA/Riviera All-American Championship, Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Center) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), dubbed #11 in the doubles rankings, lost to the #9 duo of Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra by a score of 8-4.
Next up for the women is the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 20-24.
The members of the men's team who aren't in Tulsa take to courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center tomorrow at noon when they square off with the 2006 NCAA championship-winning squad in an alumni match.
