#43 Pepperdine Overpowers Cal State Fullerton

MALIBU, Calif. - The #43-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team opened the 2011 dual campaign with a 7-0 shutout victory over Cal State Fullerton on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves are now 30-4 in season openers since the 1978 season.
Pepperdine began the dual by winning all three doubles matches. Playing in the No. 3 spot, Andrea Oates (Pretoria, South Africa) and Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand) defeated Malorie dela Cruz and Karina Akhmedova 8-2, before Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) and Marie Zalameda (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills HS) overtook Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez 8-3 to clinch the point.
The Waves carried the momentum over into singles to win all six matches. Both Anamika Bhargava (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) and Oates delivered 6-0, 6-2 wins in their respective contests.
Issara triumphed over Megan Sanford 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 position while Colffer also posted a straight set victory at No. 2 singles.
In the top match, Zalameda blanked Mai the first set before the Titan returned the favor in the second frame. In the deciding set, Zalameda found her rhythm back and tallied a 6-1 win to secure the match.
Freshman Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) won her first set 6-1, before grinding out a second-set win in the tiebreaker to clinch a shutout for the Waves.
Pepperdine continues this week's action at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by UCLA. Pepperdine faces Sacramento State on Sat., Jan. 29 before playing either the Bruins or San Diego on Sunday. The overall winner qualifies for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Feb.18-21.
