#21 Waves Roll Past #55 UC Irvine, 5-2

IRVINE, Calif. - The #21 Pepperdine men's tennis team open the 2011 dual season with a 2-0 record following a 5-2 victory over #55 UC Irvine today. Earlier this weekend, the Waves shut out #61 UC Santa Barbara 7-0.
Pepperdine swept the doubles point, winning all three matches. Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) defeated Steven Henderson and Sam Gould, 8-4, in the No. 2 doubles match. The Wave duos playing in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches both tallied the win by a single break.
Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany), who is ranked #14 in the Cambell/ITA singles rankings, made his debut playing in the No. 1 singles spot versus #33 Chris Kearney with a straight-set victory. #112 Finn Tearney, who played in the top spot yesterday against UCSB, recorded a 7-6, 6-4 win against Henderson.
Llompart was phenomenal versus Stephen Stege, not allowing a single game in his shutout win. Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) also shined, topping Shan Sondu, 6-4, 6-3.
Pepperdine's next match is on Jan. 28 when they face Virginia Tech at the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifier in Durham, N.C. A win will pit the Waves against either Duke or Michigan the following day. The top team advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 18-20 in Seattle, Wash.
