LAS VEGAS - After a lengthy, five-set win yesterday over Cal State Fullerton, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team regrouped and took two shut-out victories today to win the UNLV Invitational title. The Waves first blanked the hosting Rebels, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14), before disposing of Eastern Kentucky, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-13). With three-straight wins this weekend, Pepperdine is now 6-4 overall.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) starred for the Waves, nailing down a team-best 33 kills, as well as 29 digs during the two-day event. Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) followed that up with 31 kills. On defense, Stevi Robinson tallied 45 digs to bring her career total to 1,058. Brittney Clark (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS) was a force at the net, recording a Wave-high 11 blocks.
"She (Lilla) carried us this weekend," commented head coach Nina Matthies after the final match. "And Stevi was fantastic once again. As upperclassmen, we expect them to perform at a high level every single match, and they have stepped up to that challenge."
Freshman setter Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) dished out 26 assists against UNLV before posting 29 versus EKU. She totaled 116 assists on the weekend, in addition to helping her cause with 17 kills and a team-best .485 attack percentage.
"Kellie is getting more and more comfortable out there each match," continued Matthies. "And Victoria (Adelhelm) was simply unstoppable."
Matthies is referring to sophomore middle blocker Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS), who hit a blistering .396 (24-3-53) clip and denied attackers on 10 occasions between last night and today. She rose to the challenge in today's final match against the Colonels and recorded 11 put aways.
In the first match versus host UNLV, Pepperdine was able to control the tempo of the match with a .411 (49-12-90) hitting percentage, while limiting the Rebels to a dismal .158 success rate. Hill and Frederick hit the double-digit kill plateau with 12 and 10 put downs, respectively. Balance was the key to the match for the Waves, as every attacker on the floor accounted for at least five kills.
While some teams may rest on the laurels after such a decisive win, the Waves came out in this next match against Eastern Kentucky aggressive and focused. The Colonels were able to string together just five kills in the first frame, Pepperdine was able to take a 25-21 win.
The Waves never looked back after that, cruising to a 26-16 win in the second stanza and a 25-13 rout to seal the victory.
Pepperdine returns to action next weekend, Sept. 17-18, to face New Mexico State, Arizona and Texas State for the Arizona Invitational. West Coast Conference action begins two weeks later.
