Pepperdine Drops Season Opener to New Mexico, 3-0

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Junior middle blocker Kim Hill led the Pepperdine women's volleyball team with 11 kills, but the Waves suffered a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) loss to New Mexico on Friday evening at the at the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic.
Despite knocking down 40 total kills on a .250 attack percentage, the Lobos gained the edge with a strong showing from the service line, recording eight aces and just a single fault. New Mexico tallied 37 put aways, but just one less attack error would give them the advantage with a .264 percentage.
Kelly Williamson led the floor with a .355 (13-2-31) attack percentage, closely followed by Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) who registered a .348 (11-3-23) clip.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) was solid for Pepperdine, missing the double-double by a single kill. The junior ended the evening with nine kills and a floor-best 11 digs. Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) also tagged on nine kills, while Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) led the match with 34 assists.
The Waves won the first point of the 2010 season with a kill from the swing of Hill, and near-perfect attacking from both sides of the net would keep the score close in the opening half of the set. However, inconsistency from the service line would plague Pepperdine the remainder of the stanza as they bowed out in the first, 15-25.
Adelhelm led the Waves with four kills on just five attempts and no errors.
Pepperdine jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second frame with the help of three kills from freshman Emily Cook (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), and prompt a Lobo timeout. The break in the action proved favorable for the home team, as New Mexico scored five unanswered points to knot the score at 10.
The score continued to teeter-totter the remainder of the set, until New Mexico was able to climb to a 24-21 lead. Despite erasing one set point following a Hill kill, the Lobos were able to take a 25-22 second-game win, and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The third set mirrored the second, and despite going kill-for-kill with the Lobos, the Waves were unable to overcome six errors from the service line.
Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) aided Frederick in the backcourt with eight digs. Cook tallied eight kills in her collegiate debut.
The Waves return to the court on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10:30 a.m. (PT) to face No. 4-ranked Stanford before facing Tulane at 6:30 p.m.
