LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sophomore Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) tossed a career high 7.2 innings and struck out a season high eight batters but it wasn't enough as No. 6 UCLA topped the Waves 2-1 Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins remain undefeated at 21-0 while the Waves fell to 8-15.

Gates first ran into trouble in the fifth inning as a leadoff double and two bunt singles led to a 2-0 Bruins' lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Chris Giovinazzo broke the scoreless tie with a ground ball to short, and then Cody Regis made it a 2-0 game with his bunt single to first base.

Waves' first baseman Torrey Jacoby (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) handled the ball cleanly but once he realized that he didn't have a play at home plate, it was too late to catch the speedy Regis running behind him.

Gates escaped the frame with two fly ball outs, including a leaping grab at the right-field wall by junior Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS).

Pepperdine got a run back in the seventh on Ryan Heroy's (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) pinch hit sacrifice fly to center. Senior Colin Rooney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) led off with a walk and moved up to third after Keefer slipped in left field trying to pick up Miles Silverstein's (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) base hit.

Heroy's RBI was the 100th of his collegiate career, which began in 2007.

UCLA reliever Matt Grace replaced starter Garett Claypool following Heroy's sac fly and struck out freshman pinch hitter Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS), leaving Silverstein stranded in scoring position.

Claypool allowed the one unearned run on two hits and one walk through 6.2 innings of work while striking out nine.

UCLA closer Dan Klein picked up his fifth save of the year after striking out the side in the ninth. Klein has yet to surrender a run this season through 16.0 innings pitched.

Pepperdine has this weekend off followed by a busy next week. The Waves play host to Cal State Northridge this coming Monday and Tuesday at 3 p.m. and will then hit the road for their West Coast Conference opening series vs. Santa Clara.
