LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The #27 Pepperdine men's tennis team's upset bid at #10 UCLA got off to a good start by winning the doubles point, but the host Bruins rallied for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday.

The Waves (10-10) won at #1 and #2 doubles to claim the first point. The 22nd-ranked duo of senior Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) beat UCLA's 41st-ranked duo at #1, while sophomore Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) and freshman Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand) were victorious at #2.

The Bruins won the first two singles matches that finished, but Beidas, ranked #33, defeated UCLA's #43 Haythem Abid in straight sets at the #1 position to even the overall score at 2-2.

The other three singles matches went to a third set. The Bruins clinched the match by winning at #3 and #2, although Tearney gave Pepperdine its final point with a victory at #4.

Five of Pepperdine's 10 losses have been to top 10 teams, eight have been to top 25 squads and all have been to ranked opponents. The Bruins (13-5) had already beaten the Waves once earlier this season, 4-0, on January 31 in the second round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Pepperdine plays its final three regular-season matches at home, and next has a doubleheader on Saturday (April 10) against #30 Denver at 11 a.m. and #61 UC Santa Barbara at 3:30 p.m.
