VALLEJO, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team has opened an 11-stroke lead after Monday's first two rounds of the West Coast Conference Championships, while sophomore
Josh Anderson is the only individual in the field with a better-than-par score.
The Waves are at 584 (290-294) and their closest competitors are San Francisco (595), San Diego (596) and Santa Clara (596). The third and final round is on Tuesday at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.
Pepperdine had the best team scores in both the morning and afternoon round, and led by six strokes after the first round. The Waves are aiming for their first title since 2007 and are attempting to extend their conference-record total of 16 championships.
Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) fired a 1-under 143 (71-72) and could become Pepperdine's first medalist since 2003. He leads Jimmy Cacho of Santa Clara and Gunner Wiebe of San Diego by one stroke. Anderson had four birdies during his 1-under morning round and two birdies during his even-par afternoon round.
He's not the only Wave with a chance of winning the title, however. Junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) and senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) are both two shots back with 1-over 145s. Putnam shared the first-round lead with a 71 and then had a 74 in the afternoon and had five birdies on the day. Smith went 72-73 with a total of seven birdies.
Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) is tied for 13th place at 151 (76-75) and junior Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Calif./Cathedral HS) is tied for 18th place at 153 (77-76).
