LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Three members of the Pepperdine men's track team - led by freshman Sean King's (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) varsity record run in the 800 meters - registered personal bests at UCLA's Drake Stadium Friday during the second full day of competition at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.
King, who set the 800 varsity record two weeks ago on the same track, lowered his mark from 1:55.51 to a 1:55.33, which was good for seventh place at a meet that features over 20 colleges in addition to some of track and field's finest athletes.
Minutes before King established his new varsity record, sophomore Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) clocked a personal and season best of 9:41.52 in the 3000m steeplechase, and freshman Wesley Blundell (Brush Prairie, Wash./Prairie HS) closed out the night with a 17-second PR in the 5000m with a time of 15:28.68.
Smith's previous personal record in the steeplechase was a 9:45.74, while Blundell entered the weekend with a lifetime best of 15:42.19 in the 5K.
The Waves' women's team received personal best performances from freshman Megan Doeding (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) and sophomore Larenn Lozano (Glendora, Calif./Claremont HS). Doeding completed the 5K course with a two-second PR of 18:26.87 and Lozano posted the team's third-fastest mark in the 800m this season at 2:26.49.
Next week, King and junior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawaii/Kauai HS) head to Walnut, Calif., to compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. Both Waves will be entered in the 1500m.
