FRESNO, Calif. - Pepperdine junior Andrew Putnam (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) stood atop the leaderboard of the Fresno State Lexus Classic when the second round was suspended due to darkness Monday night.
Play will resume at 8 a.m. PT Tuesday and then the golfers will continue to play in a shotgun format to finish the third and final round. Competitors have anywhere between one and four holes left to finish in the second round.
Putnam finished Monday's first round at 2-under 69 on the par-71, 6,802-yard San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif., and later completed 15 holes of the second round. Putnam eagled the par-5 18th hole and followed with consecutive birdies on the second and third holes to lower his overall score to 5-under 125.
Putnam is joined in the top ten by senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) who is in a five-way tie for sixth place at 1-under 133. Smith posted a solid first round in which he finished 4-under with five birdies, but was slowed down by three bogeys as well as a double bogey in the second round.
As a team, the 43rd ranked Waves find themselves in second place one shot behind leader and sixth-ranked Washington and five shots ahead of No. 45 Michigan.
