TAMPA, Fla. - Pepperdine track and field freshman mid-distance runner Sean King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) finished second in both the 800 and 1500-meter runs with season-best times of 1:57.79 and 4:06.11 Friday afternoon at the University of South Florida Bull Invitational.
The Waves were in Florida all this week as part of their annual Project Serve mission to the Tampa-based Hope Children's Home. The organization has been helping discarded, abused, unwanted, or orphaned children for more than 40 years.
Under head coach Robert Radnoti, the Waves have been traveled there the last four years during their Spring Break week to clean and landscape the property as well as play and work with the children.
But Friday's focus was the USF Open, where the Waves competed against a number of Florida schools, including Florida A&M, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern and Tampa. King's showings were the best of the day for Pepperdine, although three of his teammates also posted season bests.
Junior sprinter Bridgette Walker (Oak Harbor, Wash./Oak Harbor HS) clocked season bests in the 200 and 400m. She finished the 200m in 26.11 and placed third in the 400m at 58.88.
In the distance races, sophomore Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) posted a 3K time of 8:52.25 and freshman Jonathan Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) completed the steeplechase in 10:50.52.
The Waves' track team returns to action next Saturday, March 13 at the Cal State Northridge Relays.
