OJAI, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team defeated St. Edward's University 4 1/2 to 1/2 in a match-play dual event held at the Ojai Resort on Saturday.
The Hilltoppers are coached by Todd Ohlmeyer, who played at Pepperdine from 1994-97. He was a senior on Pepperdine's 1997 national championship squad, which was current Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger's first season.
St. Edward's is ranked #12 in the latest Golf World/Nike NCAA Division II poll. The golf team (which is located in Austin, Texas) is in Southern California for an upcoming tournament and the two schools decided to get together for the afternoon since both had an open playing date.
Head-to-head results are as follows:
Andrew Putnam (PEP) def. Matthew Hatcher (SEU), 3 and 2
Josh Anderson (PEP) def. Collin Mayer (SEU), 4 and 3
Carl Smith (PEP) and Santiago Quintero (SEU), halved
Shane Mason (PEP) def. Matt Smith (SEU), 6 and 4
Andrew Widmar (PEP) def. Matt Rogers (SEU), 2 and 1
"I think it was a good experience," Geiberger said. "We had at least four guys that were at par or better. You're able to shoot a good score at Ojai if you're playing well because there are chances to make birdies. The guys seemed to enjoy it and had a good time. Hopefully they all took something from the day. If we can get to the final eight of the NCAA Championships, the match-play experience will be worth it."
Geiberger said that Putnam shot an 8-under 62 on the par-70 course.
The Waves, ranked #32 in the nation by Golfstat, next take part in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, on April 5-6.
