Men's Golf in Second at Hackler Championship

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Sophomore Josh Anderson and senior Carl Smith are in the top four after Sunday's first two rounds of the General Jim Hackler Championship and have helped the Pepperdine men's golf team into second place at the event.

The third and final round will be on Monday at the par-72 TPC of Myrtle Beach. The Waves shot a 591 (299-292) on Sunday and stand four strokes behind East Tennessee State.

Individually, Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) is in third place with a 1-under 143. He had four birdies and three bogeys during his morning round for a 1-under 71, and then had three birdies and three bogeys for an even-par 72 in the afternoon. He is three shots behind the leader, Seamus Power of East Tennessee State.

Lurking just one stroke behind Anderson is teammate Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS), who is tied for fourth with an even-par 144. His 1-under 71 in the morning featured three birdies and two bogeys, and he had a 1-over 73 in the afternoon that included four birdies.

The rest of the Waves had rough first rounds, but responded with better second rounds.

Junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) is tied for 28th place at 153 (78-75). He had a total of six birdies on the day, including five in the second round. Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) is tied for 40th place at 155 (79-76). He had one birdie in each round. Junior Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) had the biggest improvement of anyone on the course, and he is 57th at 159 (87-72). His even-par second round included five birdies.
