FRESNO, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team took sixth place at the Fresno Lexus Classic on Tuesday. The Waves were led by junior Andrew Putnam's tie for fifth place.

The play-six, score-five event was held at the par-71 San Joaquin Country Club. Darkness stopped the second round from being completed on Monday, so it was finished early Tuesday before the third and final round was held.

Pepperdine shot a total of 1,094 (355-365-374) and finished just nine strokes behind the leaders. BYU and San Diego both shot 1,085, and BYU won in a playoff.

Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) shot an even-par 213 (69-69-75), his sixth straight tournament at par or better. It was his third top 10 finish and fifth top 20 result this season. He was the second-round leader before shooting a 4-over 75 on Tuesday.

Senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS), the first-round leader, tied for 14th place and tied his best finish of the school year. He shot a 3-over 216 (67-75-74).

Sophomore Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) was right behind with a 5-over 218 (69-78-71) and tied for 25th place.

Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) and junior Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) tied for 43rd place at 224 and junior Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) tied for 87th place at 234.

The Waves take almost no time off before their next tournament, as they will head east to take part in the General Jim Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sunday and Monday (March 14-15).
