SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Chelsea Wishard registered a personal record-tying performance in the 1500-meter run Saturday, highlighting Pepperdine's afternoon of competition at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Roundup.
Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS) finished the race with a fifth-place time of 4:44.76, competing against runners from Claremont, Westmont and the host school.
"I was very pleased with Chelsea's effort even though she wanted to run faster," head coach Robert Radnoti said. "She is clearly in midseason form."
Sophomore Hannah DeWalt (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) also had a good opening race in the 800m with a time of 2:22.40, which placed her second to UCSB's Sarah Vitug.
Freshman Sean King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) ran two good races doubling in the 1500m and 800m with respectable times of 1:57.78 and 4:07.32, and classmate Wesley Blundell (Brush Prairie, Wash./Prairie HS) also put in a good effort in the 3000m with his mark of 8:52.96.
"It was great to get this early season meet under our belts especially being able to run under blue skies and sunshine in February," Radnoti said.
The Waves' next meet takes place Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. on their home course at Stotsenberg Track, playing host to the West Coast Track Challenge. The running events-only meet includes men's and women's squads from San Diego and rival Loyola Marymount.
