MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine sophomore forward Callie Payetta has been honored as the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week for women's soccer after her two-goal, one-assist outburst in a 3-2 win over #14 Santa Clara over the weekend, the league office announced today.
Payetta (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) scored the first goal of the game, then had the primary assist as Pepperdine took a 2-0 lead on Saturday (Nov. 6) at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. After Santa Clara tied the contest at 2-2, she scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
The goals were her second and third of the season, and it was the first multi-goal game of her career. For the season, she finished with three goals, two assists and eight points. Her two-season career statistics are seven goals, two assists and 16 points.
"Callie played a great game, just an excellent game," said Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward on Saturday. "She really changed the game when she came in. Her first goal was one of the best goals we scored all season."
This is Pepperdine's second WCC weekly honor this season, the first time the Waves have had multiple winners in a single season since 2006. Sophomore forward Michelle Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) claimed the award on Oct. 4 after scoring the game's only goal in Pepperdine's win over then-#11 UCLA, ending the Bruins' national-best 73-match home unbeaten streak.
Pepperdine concluded the 2010 season with a 9-6-5 record (the 11th time in the last 12 years the Waves have been at .500 or better) and in a tie for fifth place in the WCC at 2-3-2. The Waves went 2-1-1 against ranked opponents and had a 3-3-2 mark against eight foes that have made the NCAA Tournament field.
