MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine sophomore forward Michelle Manning has been honored as the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week for women's soccer after recording the game-winning goal in the Waves' upset victory against UCLA, the league office announced today.
Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) had the game's only goal as the Waves defeated the then-#11 Bruins last Friday (Oct. 1) at Drake Stadium. Pepperdine ended UCLA's national-best 73-match home unbeaten streak, and the 1-0 victory gave the Waves their first win over the Bruins since 1993.
The goal came in the 23rd minute. Moving to her left, she hit a beautiful dipping shot from just outside the box with her left foot that went toward the far post and into the upper-right-hand corner.
It was Manning's second goal of the season and third of her career.
On Sunday (Oct. 3), Manning had game highs of five shots (tied) and three shots on goal as Pepperdine tied Cal State Bakersfield, 1-1, on the road.
This is Manning's first WCC weekly honor, and the first for Pepperdine this season.
Pepperdine (7-3-3) begins West Coast Conference play this Saturday (Oct. 9) at rival Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m.
