LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The nation's longest home unbeaten streak came to an end on Friday as the Pepperdine women's soccer team traveled to #11 UCLA and left Drake Stadium with a 1-0 victory, its first win over the Bruins since 1993.
Sophomore forward Michelle Manning (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura HS) struck with a beautiful left-footed shot in the 23rd minute, and the Waves' defense did the rest in posting their fourth shutout in a row and sixth of the season.
Pepperdine improved to 7-3-2 overall while UCLA dropped to 7-3-1. The Waves beat the Bruins twice in 1993, the first two times the schools faced each other. Since then, UCLA had gone 12-0-1 against Pepperdine. The Waves' lone point during that stretch came at home in 2007 in a 1-1 tie.
The Bruins entered tonight's match with a 73-match unbeaten streak that dated back to September 2005 and was the longest in the nation.
"To come here and do this, where UCLA has such a mystique, we had to overcome that," Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. "It had to happen eventually, and it had been a long time since we beat them. They always have been and always will be such a great program. We needed a win like this as our season moves forward and we work toward the NCAA Tournament. Our defense played very, very well again. Michelle scored a very opportunistic goal. I'm so proud of the team."
The match was closely contested as the Bruins had just a 10-8 advantage in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) stopped all five UCLA shots that were on goal.
Manning's second goal of the season came with 22:58 on the clock. Junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Boston College) gave the ball to Manning at the top of the box. Manning took a couple of dribbles to her left and then blasted a dipping shot that went toward the far post. The ball made it just under the crossbar and just over top of the UCLA's goalie's fingertips.
This was the first of five consecutive road games for the Waves, who play their final non-conference contest on Sunday (Oct. 3) at CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m.
