ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Pepperdine men's golf team, led by a ninth-place finish by sophomore Josh Anderson, ended in a tie for fifth place on Saturday at the season-opening William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico.

The Waves ended with a 5-over 869 and tied with defending NCAA champion Texas A&M. Pepperdine finished the lightning-delayed second round with an even-par 288, and then shot a 6-over 294 to end the tournament.

Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) tied for ninth place with a 3-under 213. He shot a pair of even-par 72s before ending the tournament with a 3-under 69. He had a total of six birdies during the third round and had four birdies and no bogeys over his final 10 holes.

Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) tied for 21st place with a 2-over 218. He turned in an even-par 72 during the third round that included one birdie and one bogey.

Junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) tied for 24th place with a 4-over 220. He was at 1-under entering the final round but shot a 77. Senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) also tied for 24th. He shot a 3-under 69 in the second round with a total of six birdies and then finished the tournament with a 75.

Junior Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) took 55th place with a 9-over 225.

The Waves' next tournament is October 5-6 at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State, in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
