Men's Golf

Mason, Putnam Lead Waves' Start at Rees Jones

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - Shane Mason and Andrew Putnam are in the top five and the Pepperdine men's golf team is tied for fourth place after Monday's first two rounds of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate.

Not all of the squads were able to finish the second round due to darkness at the par-72 Haig Point Club. Five of the 12 teams didn't complete their round, through the Waves weren't one of them. Pepperdine shot a 310 in the morning but followed it up with a 298 in the afternoon, putting the team into a tie with UNC Wilmington at 32-over 608.

The second round will be completed early Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round.

California leads the tournament with a 4-over 580. Kennesaw State, which did not finish the second round, is at 26-over. Michigan State had a 31-over 607.

If Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) can keep it up, he's on pace for a career-best finish. The senior is tied for third place with a 2-over 146. He had a 75 in the morning (three bogies, no birdies) but a 1-under 71 in the afternoon (three birdies, two bogeys).

Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) also had a solid day with a 74 and a 73, good for a tie for fifth place at 3-over 147. The junior had one birdie in the morning and three in the afternoon.

Sophomore Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) is tied for 29th place at 156 (79-77), senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) is tied for 38th place at 160 (83-77) and redshirt freshman Johnny MacArthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) is tied for 53rd at 164 (82-82). MacArthur is making his collegiate debut.
