BATON ROUGE, La. - The Pepperdine men's golf team played two solid rounds on Monday at 2-under and is tied for fifth place at the David Toms Intercollegiate, hosted by LSU.
The Waves shot a 1-over 285 in the morning and a 3-under 281 in the afternoon and are tied with Mississippi at 566. The 3-under was the best round of the season for Pepperdine.
The third and final round at the par-71 Country Club of Louisiana will be held on Tuesday. Thunderstorms are expected overnight, however.
Junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) had a very good day and stands in a tie for 12th place. He had a 2-under 69 in the morning followed by an even-par 71, giving him a 2-under 140. He had five birdies in each round.
Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) had a big swing from morning to afternoon and is tied for 18th place. After a 3-over 74, he came back with a 4-under 67 and has a 1-under 141 overall. He had five birdies and one bogey in his second round.
Senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) had two very clean scorecards. He had a 1-under 70 in the first round with three birdies and one double-bogey, and then a 1-over 72 with one birdie and two bogeys. His even-par 142 has him in a tie for 22nd place.
Junior Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS), back in the lineup for the first time in a year and a half after redshirting last season with a back injury, is tied for 32nd place at 144 after back-to-back 72s. He had two birdies in the first round and one in the second.
Sophomore Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) is tied for 60th place at 149. He shot a 78 in the morning but bounced back with an even-par 71 in the afternoon that included three birdies.
