LA QUINTA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team posted the second-best round of the day, allowing the Waves to move up to a seventh-place finish on Tuesday at The Prestige at PGA West.
The Waves shot a final-round score of a 4-under 284 at the par-72 PGA West Stadium Course, giving them a three-round total of 880 (297-299-284). They began the round in 10th place. Only tournament champion TCU had a better round on Tuesday with a 276.
"This was much better today, more like how we can play," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. "We had more than two good scores, and that's the bottom line. It would've been nice to finish a little higher, but we were able to pull ourselves off the mat a little bit, and that was good. We know we can play at a high level."
Pepperdine had big days from senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) and junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy). Smith had a 4-under 68 and Putnam had a 3-under 69, moving both up in the individual standings.
Putnam began in a tie for 11th place and ended up sixth place with a 3-under 213 (71-73-69). Only a double-bogey on the 17th hole blemished an otherwise perfect day, as he had five birdies. He tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies over the three days.
Smith went all the way from a tie for 38th place to a tie for 14th place with a 2-over 218 (75-75-68). He had four birdies on his front nine and then had one birdie and his only bogey on the back nine.
Sophomore Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) also had a fine day with an even-par 72. He improved by multiple strokes for the second straight round and tied for 37th place at 224 (77-75-72). He had a total of four birdies during his round.
Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) tied for 51st place at 228 (77-76-75), redshirt freshman Johnny MacArthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) tied for 54th place at 229 (74-79-76) and senior Olin Browne (Tequesta, Fla./Benjamin School) tied for 66th place at 232 (75-78-79). MacArthur had three birdies while Mason and Browne each had one.
Browne was playing as an individual.
The Waves conclude their fall season at the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La., on Oct. 26-27.
