LA QUINTA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's golf team has begun The Prestige at PGA West in a tie for eighth place after Sunday's first-round action.

Pepperdine shot a 9-over 297 at the par-72 PGA West Stadium Course and is tied with Washington (which is fourth in the latest Golfweek rankings) and Central Florida.

Play continues on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 12-13) with single rounds each day.

Junior Andrew Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) had the best day for the Waves, as his 1-under 71 put him into a tie for 10th place. He had a total of five birdies during his round. He was 2-over heading into his final three holes but birdied each one of them.

Redshirt freshman Johnny MacArthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS), playing in his second career tournament, had his best round to date with a 2-over 74, tying him for 31st. Senior Carl Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) was one stroke back with a 75, putting him into a tie for 43rd.

Senior Shane Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) and sophomore Josh Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) both shot 77s and are tied for 56th place.

The four players other than Putnam each had one birdie during their rounds.

Playing as an individual, senior Olin Browne (Tequesta, Fla./Benjamin School) shot a 75 and is tied for 43rd with Smith and six others. He posted two birdies in his round.
