BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Midfielder Ashley Copp and defender Cammie Burke were Pepperdine’s unlikely offensive heroes in its 2-1 come-from-behind win at Cal State Bakersfield Wednesday night.
The victory raised the Waves’ record to 5-6-2, while the Roadrunners fell to 4-9-1.
Burke’s (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) first career goal, scored in the 56th minute off a corner kick, held up as the game-winner. The ball floated into the goalmouth, where it was first touched by Amanda Rupp (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) before Burke deflected it past CSUB goalkeeper Marina Constantinou.
Rupp’s fifth assist of the season matched her season high from 2007. The senior leads all Waves with 19 points.
Copp (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) nailed the game-tying goal in the 41st minute, scoring off a free kick that hit off Constantinou’s fingertips and into top left corner. Copp scored a similar goal earlier this season on Aug. 31 at home against UC Santa Barbara.
Pepperdine blasted 20 shots overall, which was its second-highest total of the season (22 in 6-0 win over Idaho State). Senior Emily Wynne (El Cajon, Calif./University HS) led all shooters with six attempts and placed two on goal.
Defensively, the Waves gave up nine shots, with six of them finding the frame.
CSUB’s score was courtesy of Kassi Massey, who played a rebound off a Pepperdine defender before beating goalkeeper Kayla Stolte (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) in a one-vs.-one situation in the 22nd minute. The Roadrunners’ first shot was the only one to find the net as Stolte blanked them the rest of the way on five saves.
Pepperdine begins its long-awaited West Coast Conference season Saturday at Loyola Marymount. The match kicks off at 1 p.m.
