MALIBU, Calif. -Sophomore forward Jamie Jones and senior guard Darren Cooper each recorded double-doubles and Portland registered its first road win of the season as the Pilots defeated Pepperdine 87-76 Monday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Jones scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Cooper added 16 points and 11 boards for Portland, which improved to 7-18 overall, 3-6 in West Coast Conference (WCC) play and snapped a six-game losing streak.
The Pilots' win overshadowed a record-breaking performance by Pepperdine junior center Jarrad Henry who scored nine points and totaled 11 blocked shots to break both the Pepperdine and WCC single-game record of 10 previously shared by Santa Clara's Kurt Rambis and former Wave Cedric Suitt.
Junior guard Kinglsey Costain led Pepperdine (6-19, 2-7) with 13 points while senior guards Gregg Barlow and Chase Griffin scored 12 points and sophomore guard Tomas Pranciliauskas added 11.
For the second straight game, the Waves had difficulty shooting from the outside as they were eight-for-30 (26.7 percent) from three-point range, including one-for-17 in the first half. Pepperdine also struggled on the boards as Portland out-rebounded the Waves 53-33.
Leading 36-30 at halftime, Portland opened the second half with a 24-5 run to build a 19-point lead at 60-41 with 12:05 remaining. The Pilots would lead by as many as 22 points before the Waves made a late run to cut the deficit to eight with under a minute remaining.
Pepperdine returns to action on Saturday when it travels to the Bay Area to take on San Francisco at War Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.
