Women's Soccer Falls to #3 Portland

MALIBU, Calif. Â The Pepperdine women’s soccer team ended its 2007 home season with a 2-0 loss to third-ranked Portland on Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Rokus Field.

With the victory, the Pilots (14-3-0, 6-0-0) clinched the WCC title with one game remaining.

The 2007 season comes to an end for the Waves (5-7-6, 2-3-1) next Saturday (Nov. 10) at Gonzaga.

Portland scored one goal early and one goal late. Michelle Enyeart put one home at 2:03 on a breakaway, and Angie Woznuk netted one at 85:16 following a corner kick. Keelin Winters assisted on both goals.

“To be fair, Portland was just better than us today,” Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said. “They’re a very good soccer team. But we gifted them a goal early and it felt like we weren’t focused. Sometimes that happens when you have an emotional pregame ceremony (Pepperdine honored its three seniors before the game). It took us five minutes to get going and then we played a good first half. But there’s a reason why Portland is ranked third in the country. I’m proud of our effort nonetheless.”

A series of quick passes upfield led to Portland’s first goal. Winters played a ball up the middle, and Sophie Schmidt knocked it forward with one touch. That created a breakaway for Enyeart, who scored her seventh goal of the season.

It stayed 1-0 for a long time. The Waves, who were outshot 12-3, could get the ball into Portland’s end, but couldn’t quite solve the Pilots’ back line.

The Pilots got their second goal with less than five minutes left. After a corner kick, the ball was deflected around in front of the goal, and Winters got her body on it. She knocked the ball back to Woznuk, who hit a hard drive from a few yards away that went inside the right post for her seventh goal of the season.

Pepperdine junior goalkeeper Kayla Stolte (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) made six saves and did well on a couple of occasions to stop the Pilots from scoring more than twice.

The Waves ended their home season with a 4-3-4 record at Rokus Field. They have never had a losing season at home in the program’s 15 seasons.
